Randy Orton opens up about the time he had to go through with the Eddie Guerrero death storyline on WWE
One of the most infamous WWE moments in recent memory is that of Randy Orton saying that Eddie Guerrero is in ‘hell’ after ‘Latino Heat’ had an untimely demise in November 2005.
And in the build up to WrestleMania 22, his death was used as a part of a storyline between ‘The Viper’ and Mysterio.
‘The Master of the 619’ was one of Guerrero’s best friends on and off the screen, with the duo even winning the tag team title together.
But Orton, speaking recently on the Kurt Angle Show (h/t Fightful), revealed that he was very uncomfortable with the storyline and that Vickie Guerrero, who is Eddie’s wife, and Rey Mysterio helped him go through with it.
“100% was not comfortable with it. Rey [Mysterio] assured me that it’s something Eddie would have wanted, and even still, Rey and myself went to Vickie, and Vickie gave us her blessing. She said the same thing, ‘Eddie would have wanted to help you guys in this manner.’ If he could have used his death in some way to help the business, as morbid as that sounds, he would have wanted us to do it.”

And he went on to add that he has done a lot of uncomfortable things in the past but this tops them all.
“Although it was a horrible tragedy and we all lost our friend, it was kind of something that helped me along the way in my career, and a lot of people, you know, as a bad guy talking about that. That was heat, and it worked. It helped with the angle between Rey and me. But looking back, it will always be something that was a little — there are a lot of things that I’ve done in my career that have made me uncomfortable. I think we can all agree on that, but that, in particular, was something that I’d put at the top of the list.”
Orton never worked with Eddie in a singles match. But that storyline between him and Mysterio led to a triple threat match between the two and Kurt Angle.
Mysterio went on to win the WWE title after one of the cleanest executions of 619 on Randy Orton and the fans went ballistic.
A seemingly happy ending to a rather grim situation, but it was one of the most satisfying victories for fans who would have gotten the closure they needed after Guerrero’s sudden demise.
