WCW and NFL great Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael was diagnosed with ALS

A couple of weeks back, Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael revealed that he had been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

It is a nervous system disease that slowly weakens the muscles and limits physical function. The ‘Ice Bucket challenge’ that was popularized in 2014 on the internet was a way to increase awareness and raise money for this very disease.

And sadly, one of pro wrestling’s own has been diagnosed with it. McMichael was a man of many talents.

He spent 15 years in the National Football League (NFL), 13 of which came with the Chicago Bears (1981-93) where he is considered a legend.

McMichael is known to pro wrestling fans due to his 4 year stint with WCW from 1995 to 1999 and his WrestleMania XI alongside his mate, Lawrence Taylor.

Ric Flair visits Steve McMichael to send heartfelt message after ALS news

And one of his friends, none other than WWE great Ric Flair, paid him a visit and posted a photo with him on Instagram. The caption read:

“Let Me Hear The Biggest WOOOOO For Mongo On This WOOOOO Wednesday! Keep On Fighting The Fight My Friend! [Heart emoji]”

The two were involved in a pretty heated WCW storyline back in the mid-1990s when McMichael was the United States heavyweight champion on Monday Nitro.

As for Ric Flair, he continues his work with WWE where he is still making sporadic entrances, most notably alongside his daughter, Charlotte Flair.

His most recent involvement on the show was alongside Charlotte and Lacey Evans until the latter had to take a hiatus from the show because of a real-life pregnancy.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to McMichael and his family in these trying times.
