Roman Reigns talks about competition to be the face of WWE
WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns has discussed the possibility of passing the torch in the company to another Superstar.
Reigns admits that though he is the current face, he faces tough competition from one opponent, Drew McIntyre.
The Scot has done a tremendous job since returning to WWE and was the champion before losing his title to The Miz.
While Reigns was impressed by McIntyre, The Tribal Chief was unwilling to see him as an equal: (h/t Wrestling Edge)
“Ain’t nobody. I can say my favorite number two, Drew [McIntyre]. There are a bunch of number twos, threes, whatever you want to call them. We can rank them, but they are under me. How far under? Who knows, who cares. How strong of a number two do you want to be?
“At this point, my favorite is Drew McIntyre. In a perfect world, if there is an opportunity to pass the torch to him, he’s the one guy that has captivated my attention in that manner, but he ain’t there. It’s only because I’m still here and so solid within my stronghold.”
Reigns has cemented himself as the biggest heel in WWE, facing Edge at Money in the Bank for the Universal Championship. He also adds that John Cena had to pass on the baton to him, the same way that his cousin, The Rock did to Cena. Despite his current dominance, he sees no one coming close to his level yet.
Over the years, Reigns became infamous for the crowd as he was booked as a babyface. His rivalry with John Cena in 2017, marked the coming of a new face in WWE. But, the crowd did not resonate with him until after his return.
Reigns, returned from his battle with Leukemia and turned heel with Paul Heyman. The two combining with a ‘Head of the Table’ gimmick stormed past the roster with ease.
The Chief won the title in August 2020 and hasn’t looked back since in this new persona. Now with a likely rematch with John Cena this year, it will be interesting to see what plans are in store for him.
