Sasha Banks has tears of joy as she will create WrestleMania history alongside Bianca Belair
Just a few weeks ago, WWE had its third African-American champion in Bobby Lashley when he beat The Miz on RAW.
That was a big moment for the wrestling community and in particular, the African-American fanbase that saw one of their own stand tall with the greatest pro wrestling accolade over his shoulders.
It’s not a lot of times that it has happened in the past (just The Rock and Kofi Kingston), so such a win would obviously be celebrated in a more grand way.
And following in those footsteps, the promotion will now, for the first time in its history, have two African-American women in a WrestleMania main event.
Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair are the trailblazers who will fight for the WWE SmackDown’s championship on the grandest stage of all.
And ‘The Boss’ broke down while addressing this fact on the TokenCEO podcast. The significance of the match just overwhelmed her at that moment.
She described it as something which is bigger than her and how her exploits in the promotion is not just for her, but for the millions watching her worldwide.
“But it is the first time ever that two African-American women will be headlining a WrestleMania. So, this is crazy because it’s bigger than me. And I think that’s what the beautiful thing is. Everything that I’ve done in the WWE, not only has it been for me, but it’s been bigger than me; because of the impact that it has made on so many amazing people all over the world of every colour and race, to chase their dreams.”
Banks would be hoping to retain the belt as her title match against The EST opens night 1 of WrestleMania 37 this weekend.
The PPV takes place on 10th and 11th April and will be live-streamed on the WWE Network. WrestleMania will also be broadcast on several TV channels dependent on your location.
