Shayna Baszler opens up on possible WWE match with Ronda Rousey
Speaking with Renee Paquette on her Oral Sessions Podcast, WWE Superstar Shayna Baszler has hinted at the possibility of facing Ronda Rousey in the ring.
Baszler and Rousey go way back with the pair having been friends since their MMA days. However, the duo have never gotten a chance to spar on WWE till date.
Rousey has been MIA since WrestleMania 35 in 2019 when she lost the WWE RAW Women’s Championship to Becky Lynch in the first-ever female main event at the Showcase of Immortals.
It had been claimed that the “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey was taking time off to plan a family. However, recent reports have hinted that the 34-year-old is training towards a potential comeback in the near future.
On the podcast, Paquette quizzed Baszler about Rousey’s absence while also claiming that a match between the two of them is a must-happen event on WWE.
Opening up on the potential match between her and Rousey on WWE, Baszler claimed that she has spoken to Rousey about a bout soon after their time at the UFC. The Queen of Spades went on to detail how the former RAW Women’s Champion had helped her through a difficult period, following which she had promised her the match of her life.
“Ronda and I have talked about this—after the Ultimate Fighter, I was at a stage in my life where the world fell apart. I went through this stupid breakup and I broke my ankle, all this stuff. So, Ronda had flown me out to California to be like, ‘You need to get out here the water is healing. Let’s go.’
“And I went out there and she really helped me. And so I remember toasting like ‘Ronda, I am going to give you the fight that you deserve to thank you for what you did for me in my life.‘ I remember the coaches at the time were like ‘that’s the best toast ever.’ It’s funny because Ronda and I have talked about how that’s that at the time you think that meant MMA, but it might mean this.”
The current WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion was quick to add that any match between her and Rousey must only happen on WrestleMania. But she dismissed the possibility of that happening at WrestleMania 37 next month.
“That’s a WrestleMania…we’ll see. WrestleMania [37] is coming up, so not this one per se, but it would have to be a spot where—because we’re a team first and foremost. So it’d have to be something as a teammate. And this is a very amateur wrestling mindset, but as a teammate, you’re never going to deny teammate a shot if they earn it. So it’d have to be one of those.”
Baszler, meanwhile, is currently the Women’s Tag Team Champion along with Nia Jax. The Queen of Spades could also be staring at the prospect of a WWE RAW Women’s Championship bout with Asuka after having injured her recently, which resulted in the Empress of Tomorrow attacking her this past Monday on RAW.
Will Ronda and Shayna go at it in a WWE ring? If they do, we can expect an explosive contest. For that to happen though, Rousey must return to the promotion first, of which there haven’t been many signs recently.
