Sonya Deville recalls experience about relationship status

Sonya Deville came out as the first ever openly gay female WWE star back in 2015. She was part of the WWE series Tough Enough, which paved way for new talent in the company.

The Pride Fighter caught attention after announcing that she is a lesbian on television. The step was a bold one considering the outlook about the topic, at that time.

Deville also admitted that she was afraid of taking the leap, as she thought it would affect her career. Looking back, she has no regrets and is proud to have made the decision with a huge viewer base.

Deville was part of “Absolution” led by Paige

Deville, in 2021, wants to be an active patron for the LGBT+ organisation and help others in accepting their own sexual identity, without a lack of judgement.

“I really just want to be a voice for the community in sports – specifically in the WWE,” Deville said. “I want to let people know that their sexuality doesn’t define them and how they identify doesn’t define them. And I’m a perfect example of it.” (h/t Women’s Health )

“I froze. I stalled. Everyone was watching. At that point, I wasn’t out to anybody aside from my mom, my dad, and my sisters.”

However, the Pride Fighter added that things became easier for her after coming out:

“I knew if I avoided the truth, I’d have to explain why to my girlfriend, who I’d see at home. So I decided to speak from my heart.

“I said, ‘Yeah, I have a girlfriend.’ Everyone started laughing with me and smiling—they could tell I had never said that out loud before. It was a nerve-racking moment that turned out to be an amazing and pivotal moment in my life.”

Deville seeked inspiration from MMA stars like Gina Carano and claimed she owned a lot to her for her huge success in WWE.

Deville also teamed up with Paige and Mandy Rose to form the “Absolution.” The faction created havoc. She continued to perform in tag team action with Mandy Rose as “Fire and Desire.”

Deville’s Newfound Role Post WWE Return

Sonya Deville was out of WWE action after losing to Mandy Rose at Summerslam last year. This was created after a personal life incident relating to a ‘stalker’ who was arrested on time and threatened Deville.

Deville shares a conflicting equation with Adam Pearce

Deville returned to WWE TV as an assistant to WWE’s Director of Live Events, Adam Pearce on SmackDown. She also began making backroom decisions for WWE Raw, overruling certain decisions made by Pearce. Her role seems to have been well accepted by fans as they still push for her competitive return.
