Melissa Coates passes away at age 50, better known as Super Genie

Former professional wrestler Melissa Coates has passed away at the age of 50. The entire wrestling world was in shock as Coates was confirmed dead on Thursday evening which spread across social media.

Superstars and other legends took to Twitter to pay their deepest respect to Coates after her sudden passing away.

Coates was inspired by tennis legend Martina Navratilova and decided to pursue the sport when she turned 15. She then switched to weightlifting where she won various competitions, including the Canadian Championships in 1994. Then, she continued her career before eventually shifting to a career in professional wrestling in 2005.

Coates is a former trainee at Killer Kowalski’s school in Massachusetts and also at Rick Bassman’s UPW Academy. She began in small promotions before moving to in Ohio Valley Wrestling and Deep South Wrestling. Her famous appearance in WWE came during Chris Masters’ Masterlock Challenge at WWE Backlash in 2005, where she attempted to get out of the brutal submission move.

Coates has also been seen in various films and TV shows over time including Pray For Another Day, Ultimate Death Match, A Story About Ian, and Extreme Dodgeball. She most recently came into the limelight for managing Sabu on IMPACT as ‘Super Genie.’

The death of Coates has not been confirmed yet. The news was confirmed on Thursday night by multiple sources, but the reason is yet to be ascertained. Coates just turned 50, last week on June 18.

Last year, she went through emergency surgery to remove blood clots in her leg. Her left leg underwent an amputation, causing her to spend a lot on her health. Fortunately, a GoFundMe initiative helped her in funding for her hospital expenses.

Her death comes as a shock to everyone, considering how she was a ‘sweet soul’ and a ‘kind-hearted gem’.
