Stone Cold Steve Austin credits match against Bret Hart for ‘making him’
The badass man that we know as Stone Cold Steve Austin had an origin story of him. And the WWE legend himself revealed it on his social media account earlier this week.
He shared a video of his match against Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13. That fight is rightly regarded as one of the greatest fights of all time.
And now, Austin shared that this fight really ‘made him’ in the promotion. He wrote:
“This match made Stone Cold. @BretHart is one of the all-time GOAT’s. Hell Yeah!!!RT @WWE__History: March 23rd 1997, WrestleMania 13. 24 years ago today @brethart defeated @steveaustinBSR in one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time. #WWE“
Bret Hart beat him in a Submission Match with Ken Shamrock as the guest referee. And both of them had a feud going on that year as well.
Stone Cold Steve Austin and Bret Hart share history
At the Royal Rumble PPV before WrestleMania 13, Hart eliminated Stone Cold but the referee wasn’t looking.
This allowed him to sneak back in and then eliminate Hart. Stone Cold went on to win that event, of course, marking one of his first major PPV appearances at an edition of In Your House.
He faced The Undertaker, Hart, and Vader for the vacant WWF heavyweight championship. Austin was eliminated after injuring his knee and Hart won.
He then lost the title on RAW is War to Sycho Sid due to interference from Stone Cold. So in a way, this feud, if not the match, really made Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Stone Cold stopped fighting actively by 2005 but has been making sporadic appearances on the promotion, with March 16th, 2020, being his latest one when he was on the show to promote 3:16 as a holiday.
