Stone Cold Steve Austin shares his three favourite WWE WrestleMania moments
Speaking to Mark Henry on the Busted Open Podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin opened up on his top three WrestleMania moments.
Regarded as one of the greatest ever wrestlers to have been part of WWE, Stone Cold Steve Austin, in his illustrious career, had several notable moments at the “Showcase of the Immortals”.
And building up to the latest edition of “The Show of Shows”, i.e., WrestleMania 37, Stone Cold took a trip down the memory lane, to list his three favourite moments at “The Grandest Stage of Them All”.
Austin named his match with Bret ‘The Hitman’ Heart at WrestleMania 13 in 1997 as one of his favourites, given how the two put on a brutal fight, while also pulling off a double turn with Hart going heel and Austin becoming babyface.
“One of my favourites would’ve been WrestleMania 13 with Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart… He really made me in that match. And, of course, we executed a double turn which is super rare and to pull off and execute that… takes a lot of talent to do that and we did.”
Austin then went on to name his first-ever title win at WrestleMania 14 in 1998 against Shawn Michaels, which came courtesy of an assist from the guest ‘Special Enforcer’ in the form of Mike Tyson. The WWE Hall of Famer recalled how he was against the idea of having Tyson involved, but the crowd reaction changed his mind.
“Winning my first title in 14 against Shawn Michaels – the greatest in-ring performer in my opinion ever. With the one and only Mike Tyson, who brought on all those outside eyeballs to the product.
“I’ll never forget when Vince says ‘you know we’ve thought about bringing Mike Tyson in’ and I’m like ‘this sounds stupid’, cuz I was all about the business right. I was like ‘Man, do you really think we need Mike’ [laughs]. And when came Mike came in the world started watching, so I was like ‘yeah, we need Mike Tyson’.”
Austin’s third top moment came in WrestleMania 17 in 2001 when he faced The Rock in a ‘No Disqualification’ match and turned heel. The Texas Rattlesnake felt particularly special about the match as the likes of Edge, Christian, The Hardy Boyz, The Dudleys had put on a stunning show prior to that. But, he and The Rock were able to top it and end the show on a high.
“And of course I got to go to 17, me and The Rock. 17 was a loaded card and everybody had a stellar match that night and it was a record crowd at the Houston Astrodome. And we ripped it from start to finish, you know. And of course, I turned heel.”
2003 would be the last time Austin fought on WrestleMania, where he lost to The Rock, which would turn out to be his final match ever as he announced his in-ring retirement. Austin continues to make appearances on WWE frequently, most recently showing up on the RAW episode on 16th March 2020 to celebrate ‘3:16 day’.
