The New Day had an altogether different original name planned initially before they could be incepted
21st July, 2014 saw the start of something massive. ‘The New Day’ made their official debut. The faction consisting of Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods made their in-ring debut 5 months later on SmackDown.
7 years later, they are still one of the top tag teams in the WWE, although Big E is currently performing in a different brand.
In the last 7 years, the New Day have won the SmackDown tag team championship an impressive 7 times, and the Raw equivalent 4 times.
A whopping 11-time tag team champions the New Day have been. They also hold the record for the longest tag team championship reign in WWE history.
They are in fact, considered by many to be the greatest tag team in WWE history.
In the latest episode of Talk is Jericho podcast alongside Matt Lee and Jeff Parker, Chris Jericho revealed that the New Day would have had an entirely different original name.
‘Fresh Coat of Pain’ was what the New Day would have been called had they not decided to go ahead with the current name.
Jericho was quoted as saying:
“That’s what New Day was. Their originally name was literally, this is not a joke, ‘Fresh Coat of Paint’. They decided on New Day basically right before. If you think about, what does that even mean? Even ‘New Day’, what does that even mean?”
The New Day are currently a team of two
The 2020 draft saw Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston move to WWE Raw and Big E remain in SmackDown causing a split in the New Day.
They are currently a team comprised of Woods and Kingston alone, while Big E is performing as a singles star on SmackDown. He has already won the Intercontinental championship once and is the holder of the Men’s Money in the Bank Contract.
It is still uncertain when Big E will be joining Woods and Kingston since he has been very successful in his own storyline. There is no rift between Big E – Woods and Kingston.
