WWE decided to use a drunk-driving storyline featuring Jeff Hardy

Former WWE star Tommy Dreamer questioned WWE creative’s decision regarding a recent storyline with Jeff Hardy.

Hardy has a history of substance abuse and has battled several demons in his career. However, WWE decided to use a similar angle for a recent storyline.

The Enigmatic Charisma was arrested for a hit and run and drunk-driving with Elias leaving on a stretcher.

However, Hardy came back later in that show and cost Sheamus a match. He was on the microphone again on this week’s SmackDown and explained that he did no wrong and hinted that Sheamus had caused the accident.

Dreamer wasn’t all too keen with this line and shared his thoughts on the same:

“I had some problems with it, the whole Jeff Hardy drunk-driving segment. I personally did not like it for the fact that this angle has been done a couple of times.

“There is no big pay off. You know a person’s going through some tough times. To me, somebody’s sobriety is bigger than anything on television.

“The end result has never been anything in professional wrestling. I am happy they opened it with an explanation.”

WWE has to be better

Dreamer further explained why such storylines need to be a little careful regarding the wrestlers. Most of the stars participate in several talk shows after their shows and they are free to be out of character.

The former ECW star also added that WWE creative had to do a better job as some of these angles have been seen in the past.

He wanted writers to adapt to this situation and not go through this route. Mark Henry was the co-host for this episode of the Busted Open podcast and highlighted that using cancer in a storyline would be touchy to some since his mother had passed away due to cancer.

He had no problems with a reference to the substance abuse but didn’t want it to be the center of the storyline.

Henry added that such angles could take people away from WWE and many would have switched over to a different show.

Hardy would have had to say yes to this angle before it was produced. However, it still is a touchy subject that WWE didn’t really deal with in the correct manner.
