The decision was inevitable but it has hit hard because Vince McMahon’s retirement marks the end of an era. The 77-year-old chose Twitter as the platform to announce his retirement.
Vince McMahon is one of the linchpins of the professional wrestling industry. He changed the landscape of professional wrestling with his no holds barred choices and futuristic ideologies. Some of his decisions baffled fans but he had the confidence to stand by his thought process and do what he felt was right for the business.
People have questioned some of the storylines he has put forward over the years. He has landed in several controversies. However, none could bog him down. He bounced back from the extreme lows of life to soar to levels of success that people could only dream of. Yes, his last controversy while in WWE tarnished his reputation, and maybe the veteran feels that the damage caused is irreversible. Otherwise, he is not someone that would go away so quietly.
Last month, it was reported by the Wall Street Journal that the board of directors of the Stamford-based company is investigating the substantial payment made to a former female employee from Mr. McMahon’s funds.
The 12 members of the board are looking into the reasons why the aforementioned payment was made by the former “Boss” of WWE.
The separation agreement was signed in January. It was meant to stop the ex-employee from discussing her relationship with McMahon or making scathing remarks about him, according to the report.
After the allegation, Mr. McMahon decided to step down from his role as the CEO and Chairman of WWE. His daughter Stephanie McMahon took charge as the interim CEO of WWE.
McMahon took to Twitter a few hours before this week’s SmackDown and wrote:
“At 77, time for me to retire.
Thank you, WWE Universe.
Then. Now. Forever. Together. #WWE #thankful”
Vince McMahon’s news has shocked the pro wrestling fraternity. The Twitter world has been set ablaze post the announcement.
