How did Randy Orton make it to WWE?
Jim Ross has recently shared what he did to get Randy Orton signed by the WWE. Ross was the head of talent relations at that time. It was Ross who had spotted Orton in the first place and wanted him to be signed by WWE. But it wasn’t an easy task.
Ross revealed on his Grilling JR Podcast (h/t Wrestling Inc) that Vince McMahon wasn’t very convinced with Orton. The Viper before joining wrestling was a marine officer and was sent back on two occasions for disobeying the commanding officer. This made him doubt Orton’s discipline and the company requires those who can listen and act accordingly.
“I had a hard sell to get Randy Orton hired because of his negative exit from the Marines, and Vince, being a strong patriot, didn’t like how that worked out with Randy in the military. I said, ‘Didn’t you get a second chance, [Vince]? Well, what’s the difference with this kid? He’s third generation. If he hits, look what we have. If he doesn’t hit, I can get rid of him in 90 days notice. What do we have to lose?’”
Ross revealed McMahon being a patriot he had an issue with how he had left the marines. Ross mentioned that he asked McMahon to give him a chance and see if it works out.
Orton was later signed in a developmental deal and has been a part of WWE since 2001. McMahon’s doubt has certainly been cleared now as Orton will go down as one of the best WWE wrestlers.
Orton was signed by in 2001 in a developmental deal before making his first appearance in 2002. The Viper has most certainly been one of the best performers in the history of the WWE.
He has won the world championships 14 times in his career. Orton’s character has also given us many unforgettable rivalries with including the Undertaker, John Cena and Edge just to name a few. The Legend killer will go down as one of the performers in the WWE ever and also a future Hall of Famer.
