Vince McMahon reveals he thought WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley had no talent
Speaking on the Mick Foley Biography on A&E Network (h/t Fightful), WWE chairman Vince McMahon has revealed that he once thought pro-wrestling legend and Hall of Famer Mick Foley had no talent.
Foley is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most daring pro-wrestlers in the history. He joined WWE (then WWF) in 1996, prior to which he had had stints with WCW, ECW as well as IWA in Japan, where he wrestled under the “Cactus Jack” persona.
It is quite well-known that McMahon was not sold on the idea of having Foley on WWE and had to be convinced by Jim Ross to take the plunge.
And while the move would pay off handsomely, the head honcho has now revealed that he was never a fan of Foley and Cactus Jack and found the act ‘degrading’.
“I thought it was kind of degrading to our product. I thought he didn’t have any talent. I thought it was déclassé.”
McMahon, however, acknowledges that Foley had a charisma that made him connect with the audience instantly, something he did not realise until he hired him in 1996.
“Mick always had that connection with the audience and I never really saw before he came here. I thought, ‘Boy, We’re never going to hire that guy,’ but he did. He had that connection and very few people have that.”
Foley went on to have a gloried career in WWE during which he became a three-time WWE Champion, the inaugural Hardcore Champion as well as an eight-time Tag Team Champion.
Foley was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013 and continues to make sporadic appearances for the company till date.
