Did WWE make a mistake by releasing India’s Kavita Devi?

Kavita Devi was recently released by the WWE as a part of their budget cuts

Devi, the first female professional wrestler from India to be a part of the WWE was recently released by the promotion due to their usual budget cuts.

She had joined the company in 2017, where she participated in the 2017 Mae Young Classic. But she was eliminated in the very first round by Dakota Kai.

Devi then began training at the WWE Performance Center, and on the 8th of April, 2018 she made her in-ring WWE debut, as one of the participants in the Women’s Battle Royal at WrestleMania 34.

She then made her NXT Live Event debut 11 days later. That same year, she once again took part in the Mae Young Classic (2018), but was unfortunately eliminated in the first round yet again.

The power-lifter last appeared on TV in July 2019, and had to return to India due to family issues. She was supposed to comeback earlier this year, but got caught up due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She recently shared a post on Instagram saying that being released from the WWE isn’t the end:

It is to be noted that, Devi was trained by the Great Khali and made her wrestling debut under his promotion Continental Wrestling Entertainment.

Was it a mistake by the WWE to release Kavita Devi

The 34-year old hailing from Haryana is known for her brute force. During her short career in the WWE, she was seen lifting opponents with ease in her power-lifting stance.

As she was the first female WWE wrestler from India, she was an inspiration for a legion of fans in the country which almost idolizes WWE stars.

Even during her debut against Dakota Kai at the 2017 Mae Young Classic, she showed wrestling in an Indian attire is duck soup, proving her doubters and critics wrong.

Being the only female WWE wrestler in a country with a population of more than a billion, the promotion might have angered a few ‘WWE hardcores’.

With that said and done, inactivity has to be the only reason behind her release. Since being out of the WWE for almost 2 years, not because of an injury, will surely lead to being cut from the promotion.

Had she come back earlier this year, things might have been different.
