Vince McMahon has always been strong-minded and focused on the company and its well-being. During an interview on The Pat McAfee Show, the Chairman and CEO of WWE made some interesting revelations.
Vince McMahon is 76-years-old and who will take WWE forward is a very critical and pertinent question at this point. We have heard many stories of Mr. McMahon being stubborn and not prone to take risks. But we have got to give it to him for always putting the company ahead of himself.
Pat McAfee asked Mr. McMahon about what the succession plans are for the company and if he has started thinking about the same. Mr. McMahon made it clear that the successors don’t necessarily have to come from his family. He said:
“No, I don’t think about it a lot. Hopefully, if you built something, hopefully you want it to continue on and prosper and grow, whether that’s with a family member or without a family member. You have to be objective, and look at family members, whoever it is, just like you would other employees. And quite frankly, I probably have expected more out of my family members, which is probably not the right thing either.”
Pat was a bit shocked as most of us were after hearing this and he retorted: “That’s gonna be a big deal right there, what you just said.” To this, Vince McMahon stressed that the right thing has to be done for the business and if someone is not performing well for the company then that person shouldn’t be a part. He said: “But nonetheless, you have to do the right thing for the business. So if this person is not working out, then they shouldn’t be a part of the company.”
This particular quote is quite interesting as we have seen WWE President Nick Khan gather a lot of power backstage over the last few years. This coincided with Triple H’s brainchild NXT being beaten comprehensively every week by AEW. When Triple H started NXT, it had become quite a rage. WWE fans got to witness how superstars of the future, fare in the present. The brand gave a platform to superstars like Big E, Wade Barrett, Sasha Banks, Mandy Rose, Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Paige, and many more.
It was after AEW came into existence that NXT’s popularity started going on a downward spiral. Then Triple H also encountered a serious medical issue and required a heart operation. The Game’s version of the NXT was taken down and a new NXT 2.0 was launched which had stark differences.
Triple H is married to Vince’s daughter Stephanie McMahon and for a long time, it was talked about that they would be the ones carrying the company forward. After the NXT saga, that isn’t a guarantee.
Vince’s son Shane McMahon is in the mix but he was sent packing by his father after apparently trying to do things his way during this year’s Royal Rumble.
As per reports, Shane wanted to be a part of the Elimination Chamber as well and go on to feud with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 38. Father and son couldn’t get on the same page.
So as of now, Vince McMahon stating that the reigns of the company don’t have to be in the family is quite a feasible standpoint. It is certainly going to be a big deal as Pat McAfee pointed out.
