It seems to be a season of Championship unifications in WWE. First, the WWE Championship and the Universal Championship were unified, and then the RAW and SmackDown Tag Team Championships also encountered the same fate.
Roman Reigns unified the WWE and Universal Championships after beating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38. Reigns’ cousins, The Usos, managed to unify the RAW and SmackDown Championships thanks to their win against RK-Bro last week on SmackDown.
RAW commentator Corey Graves feels that the time is right to unify the Intercontinental Championship and the United States Championship. Speaking on his After The Bell podcast, the former NXT Superstar explained why he feels that the two prestigious mid-card titles must be merged.
“I think it’s beyond time, I think we take the final step,” Graves said. “I think we need to unify the United States and Intercontinental Championships as well, I love having the Champions float because to me it just makes everything feel more important. There’s only one top guy now. Roman Reigns is that dude, period, on RAW, on SmackDown.” [9:12-10:03]
Corey Graves discusses an idea if WWE goes on to unify the titles
Theory is the current United States Champion on the RAW brand while Ricochet is the Intercontinental Champion on SmackDown.
Theory and Ricochet won their respective titles from Finn Balor and Sami Zayn. While Theory won the United States Championship on the April 18 episode of RAW, Ricochet became the Intercontinental Champion on March 4.
Corey Graves feels that the winner of a potential Intercontinental Championship versus United States Championship match should appear across different brands.
“If the Intercontinental Championship is what stays, then that gets defended sometimes on Friday Night SmackDown and sometimes it happens on RAW,” Graves added. “Maybe there’s a story on NXT. But having the Champions float to me, it freshens everything up and it makes everything more important because there’s less of them.” [10:40-10:57]
We have already seen Roman Reigns and The Usos appearing on both RAW and SmackDown since becoming Unified Champions. It will be interesting to see if WWE decides to unify another two titles.
The Intercontinental and United States Championships have not been given due importance. Unification could give a fresh lease of life to the two titles which were held by many WWE Hall of Famers.
