The Money in the Bank pay-per-view took place on July 2 and the WWE Universe has called the event a grand success. However, they were not too thrilled with Theory becoming Mr. Money in the Bank.
Now it’s time to focus our attention on the upcoming pay-per-view and it’s a big one – SummerSlam. “The Biggest Party of the Summer” is less than a month away and possibilities are endless as superstars will be jockeying for positions in hope of featuring in WWE’s second-biggest event of the year.
We have two confirmed matches till now while other matches will be announced over the next few weeks. We will have only 4 episodes of Raw and 4 episodes of SmackDown ahead of the event so the matches will be announced thick and fast.
Lets’ take a look at when and where SummerSlam 2022 will happen and where to watch all the action:
Date | 30, July 2022 |
Venue | Nissan Stadium |
City | Nashville, Tennessee, USA |
Where to watch | Peacock in the U.S. and WWE Network elsewhere |
Confirmed matches for SummerSlam 2022:
Pat McAfee VS Happy Corbin
Happy Corbin accused Pat McAfee of ridiculing him after losing a match on the June 17 episode of SmackDown. Corbin said that McAfee made fun of him when he was going through a tough phase in his pro wrestling career. The Lone Wolf also blamed McAfee for coining the term “Bumpass Corbin”. McAfee laughed Corbin out of the arena. The following week, McAfee challenged Happy Corbin to a match at SummerSlam.
WWE advertised that Corbin would answer the challenge on the July 1 episode of SmackDown, but that eventually did not happen. After the Money in the Bank pay-per-view went off the air, Corbin came out of nowhere and brutally assaulted McAfee. After laying waste to his nemesis, Corbin said, “Hey Pat, challenge accepted”.
WWE announced on their official Twitter handle that the Pat McAfee vs Happy Corbin match at SummerSlam had been confirmed. This is going to be McAfee’s fifth televised match in the Stamford-based company.
Roman Reigns (c) versus Brock Lesnar – Last man standing match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship
Roman Reigns defeated Riddle to retain the WWE Universal Championship on the June 17 episode of SmackDown. He told Paul Heyman that no one was left to challenge him for the title. However, much to the chagrin of the Tribal Chief, Brock Lesnar came out to the ring. The Beast Incarnate took out The Bloodline single-handedly.
Later, WWE announced that Lesnar will take on Reigns in a Last Man Standing match at SummerSlam 2022 for the WWE Universal Championship. The two men have a lot of history between them. They faced each other for the last time in April at WrestleMania 38. Reigns defeated his arch-rival and unified the world titles.
As per various reports, WWE’s initial plan was to have Randy Orton challenge Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal title but the Viper is currently taking time off from the company to rest his injured back. WWE did not hesitate in going back to their tried and tested formula of a Lesnar versus Reigns match. Just to change things up a bit, they have added the last man standing stipulation.
Liv Morgan (c) versus Ronda Rousey – SmackDown Women’s Champion
Liv Morgan had a great time at the Money in the Bank PPV. She won the Money in the Bank ladder match and two hours later, she went on to cash it in on Ronda Rousey. Morgan managed to pin The Baddest Woman on the Planet and won the SmackDown Women’s Championship. This is Morgan’s first championship reign in WWE. Rousey congratulated Morgan on the triumph and hugged her before leaving the ring. However, the former MMA star would have the chance to win back the title at SummerSlam. Morgan is riding high on her win and it doesn’t seem that she will drop the title as yet. How she manages to defeat Rousey will be an interesting thing to watch.
Theory versus Bobby Lashley (c) – United States Championship
Theory defeated Finn Balor to win the United States Championship a few months ago. He became the youngest United States champion in the history of WWE. Bobby Lashley won the United States Championship from Theory at Money in the Bank. However, Vince McMahon’s protege announced that he will have his rematch at SummerSlam.
The Usos (c) versus The Street Profits – Undisputed Tag Team Championship match – Jeff Jarrett will be the special guest referee
The Usos and The Street Profits are two of the best tag teams going around in WWE. Whenever they have been in the ring, they have captivated the WWE Universe. The former NXT Tag Team Champions faced The Usos at Money in the Bank for the Undisputed Tag Team Championship. The match stole the show as all four wrestlers put in a stellar shift. The finish to the match was controversial, to say the least. Jimmy Uso covered Montez Ford for the three-count. The Usos continued their title reign but on replays, it was clear that Ford had his shoulders up.
On the July 15 episode of SmackDown, Angelo Dawkins defeated Jimmy Uso but replays showed that the latter’s shoulder was off the mat. Both the teams have been victims of wrong decisions from the referees. After the match, Adam Pearce came out and revealed that WWE Hall of Famer Jeff Jarrett will be the special guest referee for The Street Profits versus The Usos match at SummerSlam for the Undisputed Tag Team titles.
However, it is expected that The Bloodline members will retain. WWE has teased a split up between The Street Profits. We could see a heel turn after the match ends.
Bianca Belair (c) versus Becky Lynch – RAW Women’s Championship
These two exceptionally skilled women have a lot of history between them. Their feud began back in SummerSlam 2021 when Lynch returned from maternity leave and defeated Belair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship in 26 seconds. The EST got her retribution when she defeated Big Time Becks at WrestleMania 38 to win the RAW Women’s Championship in a highly-acclaimed match.
The two superstars will lock horns once again at SummerSlam this year. Lynch will look to win the world championship for the third time in her career.
Logan Paul versus The Miz
From mentor-student to bitter enemies, the relationship between these two men has turned sour quite quickly. At WrestleMania 38, Paul put up a decent effort in the ring alongside The Miz to defeat Rey and Dominik Mysterio in a tag team match. However, after the match ended, The A-lister hit a Skull Crushing Finale on Paul.
The social media star did not forget that. He recently signed with WWE and will now have a one-on-one match against the former WWE Champion at SummerSlam. This match was made official on the July 18 episode of RAW.
Seth Rollins versus Riddle
Seth Rollins and Riddle have not taken too much time to build up a spicy rivalry. Rollins endured a series of losses against Cody Rhodes. However, he has had a number of important wins after the American Nightmare was ruled out for nine months due to a torn pectoral muscle.
Riddle has been wrestling crucial one-on-one matches of late. In fact, he was the first one to challenge Roman Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship after the Tribal Chief unified the titles at WrestleMania 38. However, the former United States Champion could not pick up the win. Riddle versus Rollins promises to be an exciting match that any wrestling fan would not want to miss.
The Judgement Day versus Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio – No Disqualification match
The Judgement Day has had issues with the Mysterios as of late. They initially wanted Dominik to join their group. They forced Dom into joining the faction but denied him access at the last moment.
On the July 25 episode of RAW, Rey and Dominik teamed up to take on Damian Priest and Finn Balor. Rey was celebrating his 20-year anniversary with WWE on the show. They picked up the win but Rhea Ripley made a comeback and the heels assaulted the legendary Rey backstage.
A no disqualification was made official for SummerSlam. Priest and Balor will team up to take on the father-son duo. It is a no disqualification match so expect Ripley to attack the Mysterios on a number of occasions during the match.
