Zhang Weili was born in Hebei, China and later moved to Beijing. She started training for MMA as early as a 12-year-old when she undertook training for Shaolin Kung-Fu. She cites Kung-Fu movies as an inspiration for her getting into the sport of MMA as a kid.
She worked various jobs, like a cashier, a teacher, and a hotel desk clerk. But throughout this, Weili trained for MMA and she chose the sport as her primary career path in 2007. Zhang made her MMA debut as far back as November 2013.
She later went to Kunlun Fight, where she put her name on the map and became the women’s strawweight champion. The Chinese sensation is a force to reckon with in the promotion and is already the #5 pound-for-pound ranked woman in UFC.
Zhang Weili has a net worth of approximately $2 million, which is pretty high considering she only joined UFC in mid-2018. She was at Kunlun Fight for many years but the pay there is, of course, nowhere near as high as that in the UFC.
One of her biggest payouts from a single fight was when she beat Polish fighter Joanna Jedrzejczyk to defend her title and take home a cool $290,000. The first time she earned 6 figures in just one fight was her title bout against Jessica Andrade.
The title fight at UFC Fight Night 157 saw her earn the belt from the Brazilian, as well as $180,000. She has a total career earning of approximately $727,500 in the UFC, which is going to increase in the future considering she has only fought just 6 times in the promotion so far.
Her last fight didn’t go her way with a loss to Rose Namajunas, but she still made $132,000 in that losing cause.
In her rematch against Joanna at UFC 275, Weili earned a faceplant KO, which saw her take home $360,000.
After winning the title against Carla Esparza at UFC 281, Weili made an impressive $482,000.
Zhang Weili boasts quite arguably one of the best professional records in women’s MMA. Her professional MMA record of 23-3-0, however, majorly built up outside the UFC. But that doesn’t mean she’s overhyped.
Weili has a UFC record of 7-2-0, and her first loss in the UFC came at UFC 261. This includes wins against Jedrzejczyk and the hard-hitting Andrade, with both of them being fights for the UFC women’s strawweight titles.
She was also unbeaten during her time at Kunlun Fighting, with her only loss coming in her professional MMA debut in November 2013, when she lost to Meng Bo in the Chinese MMA League.
She held the UFC strawweight title but lost that to Namanjunas at UFC 261 before losing to the American again at UFC 268.
However, she regained the title at UFC 281.
The Chinese MMA fighter is reportedly not dating anyone and does not have a boyfriend. And it goes without saying then that she is also not married yet. As for her family, very little is known.
Weili keeps her personal life private and doesn’t post a lot about her family on her social media accounts. ESPN, however, revealed that her father is a retired mine digger while her mother is a housewife.
Weili has had a plethora of endorsements since her title win against Andrade at UFC Fight Night 157. This includes an ad campaign with Audi and Wusu Beer. She is currently endorsed by Perfect Sports.
