Here’s everything you should know about the prize money on offer at the 2023 Zhengzhou Open
The Zhengzhou Open is a tennis competition exclusively for female professional players, and it takes place on outdoor hardcourts. Starting in 2014, the tournament was originally hosted in Zhengzhou, China, as an ITF event. In 2017 and 2018, it transitioned into a WTA 125 tournament.
However, its status was upgraded significantly from 2019 onward when it became a WTA Premier level tournament, effectively replacing the Connecticut Open in the United States. After a three-year break, the tournament made a comeback in 2023, now classified as a WTA 500 event.
The 2023 Zhengzhou Open marks the tournament’s seventh edition and is designated as a WTA 500 event on the 2023 WTA Tour calendar. Scheduled to be held at the Henan Provincial Stadium in Zhengzhou, China, it is set to take place from October 9th to October 15th, 2023. Notably, this edition signifies the return of the tournament after a hiatus since 2019, with the preceding editions having been canceled due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in China and the concerns arising from the disappearance of Peng Shuai.
The Zhengzhou Open serves as the concluding WTA 500 tournament of the 2023 season and unfolds at the Central Plain Tennis Center during the month of October. Notably, the total prize money for the 2023 Zhengzhou Open amounts to $780,637, representing a significant decrease of -47.96% when compared to the 2019 edition. The champion in China’s Henan province will be awarded a prize of $120,150, marking a -55.15% reduction from what Karolina Pliskova earned in 2019.

The Zhengzhou Open consists of a singles draw with 28 players and a doubles draw featuring 16 teams. The tournament will employ the Wilson US Open Regular Duty ball for play. In its inaugural edition back in 2019, Karolina Pliskova emerged as the singles champion, triumphing over Petra Martic with a score of 6-3, 6-2. In the doubles category, Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Kveta Peschke secured the title by defeating Tamara Zidansek and Yanina Wickmayer with a score of 6-1, 7-6(2).
Following the draw for this edition, Coco Gauff (right shoulder), Elena Rybakina (low back), and Karolina Muchova (continuing right wrist) were forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injuries. Their positions in the draw were filled by the next highest-seeded players who did not receive a bye. The 2023 edition now prominently features star players such as Maria Sakkari, Ons Jabeur, Caroline Garcia, Barbora Krejcikova, and Daria Kasatkina.
