After World War II, the sale of automobile brands was reduced to an extent. Many companies suffered losses, but some cars did great sales. One among them was the Mercury Monterey which still remains a legendary vehicle. The Mercury Monterey was a special package of the regular Mercury Eight. Engines

The Mercury Monterey was available as a coupe, convertible, and sedan. It was not a performance package, but the top speed was 90mph. Powered by a Flathead V8 engine, 3-speed manual gearbox, hydraulic brakes, and independent suspension, the vehicle offered a smooth driving experience. It was mainly designed for long drives. Mercury Monterey was not a racing vehicle unlike other Mercury models.

Features and Technology 

The 49′ Mercury Monterey had premium features. Some of the luxury features were Bench seats, Metal dashboard trim, Heater, Analog Gauges, AM Radio, Heater, and Clock. The suspension was built with leaf springs and coil springs. The mechanical features like carburetors, water-cooled system, and independent suspension ensured the durability was great. 

Designs 

The 1949 Monterey will be remembered for its incredible styling. Be it the Bathtub body, rounded hood, or grille, these were the major attractions. The other styling like circular headlights, chromium bumper, rounded pontoon fenders, low roofline, and rear fenders were all exceptional. Inside the vehicle, a wide metal dashboard was placed with a horizontal speedometer. It was mostly filled with chromium.

Legacy 

The impact of 49′ Monterey was massive which also helped the vehicles which came into production in 1952. It first garnered attention in the film, “Rebel Without a Cause”. Mercury Monterey became the favorite of youngsters and families. It appeared in tv shows, custom car shows, and hot rod magazines. The vehicle was also featured in American documentaries. As the vehicle was known for its tuning, it was loved by custom car owners and fans. The original Mercury Monterey enjoyed a massive fan following for years.

Comfortable and Durable 

Not every vehicle in the 50s offered a smooth ride with excellent endurance, but the Mercury Monterey offered both. With the Flathead V8 engine and other technologies, the durability was great. People could drive through forests, mountains, and off-road with no noise. The engine was smooth with the best gearbox and chassis. Also, the suspension came with a coil and leaf spring which resulted in a comfortable ride. Mercury Monterey also offered a great ride for passengers with its bench seats, spacious cabin, and luxury features.

Expensive Vehicle 

Mercury Monterey was sold for around $2,500 USD. Most units were available as hardtop and some were 2-door coupes. It was expensive and the inflation will be higher than $30,000 USD right now. There is no information regarding the total units of the Monterey in 1949 as it was part of the Mercury Eight generation. It was reported that only 5,000 units of this model were sold, but nothing was official.
