B18 Engines

The B18 was the best engine for Volvo cars years back. Amazon cars were equipped with multiple B18 engine codes like A, B, and D. These were equipped with the inline-4 engines with single and twin carburetors. Based on engines, the top speed was between 90 MPH to 100 MPH. Built around rugged engines, the Volvo Amazon cars had great endurance.

Technology

The mechanical features for the 67′ Volvo Amazon model were the best which resulted in high endurance and handling. The key technologies were manual gearbox, electrical system, and OHV. Suspension featured coil springs and trailing arms. The vehicle had both drum and disc brakes as well. Though it was not a high speed vehicle, the Volvo Amazon never disappointed with its performance. It had a new Recirculating-ball steering system which gave great acceleration.

Features

Volvo focused on endurance and safety more than anything for Amazon vehicles. This car followed the same pattern with bucket seats, speedometer, warning lights, lockable glovebox, and padded dashboard. Other comfort features like sun visors, windshield defroster, and ventilation system were available as well. Some models featured the clock, AM radio, cigarette lighter, and laminated windshield.

Three-Point Seat Belts

Volvo Amazon became the very first production car in the world to incorporate the three-point seat belt feature. This made it one of the safest cars in the world. When this feature was added, many cars didn’t have seat belts. This was another reason for the vehicle’s success. Because of this vehicle, the modern seat belts were widely used in the future cars.

Motorsport Success

The Volvo Amazon was a racing vehicle and many were surprised by its entry in motorsport. As it was a rugged vehicle with durable engines, Volvo decided to participate in races. It featured in races like Acropolis Rally, European Rally, Endurance Rally, and Circuit Racing events. Although it didn’t find success like other NASCAR cars, Volvo was happy that the vehicle featured in racing events.

Successful Sales

The Volvo Amazon was one of the commercially successful vehicles from Sweden. It sold around 6.7 lakh units throughout its production. Volvo Amazon was sold for around $2,400 USD to $4,000 USD. Apart from Sweden, it was sold primarily in countries like Belgium, South Africa, the Netherlands, and Canada. Volvo became one of the top automobile brands after the entry of this model. Today, the original Volvo Amazon vehicles are rare to find in collector markets. Some restored vehicles were sold for around half a  million USD.
