In 1970, Pontiac unveiled the special performance package in the form of Firebird Formula 400. This was part of the regular Pontiac Firebird series. The model was in production between 1970 to 1979. V8 Engine
Firebird Formula was a fiery car with the Pontiac 400 V8 engine. Muscle cars always preferred the V8 engines which produced strong torque and high speed. This model also featured OHV and Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetors. Overall, the accelerator and cornering were incredible. The top speed was close to 130mph. This was possible because of the engines and the internal components.
Technology
Based on the GM F-body platforms, Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 had new technologies. Some of the mechanical features were carbureted fuel system, independent suspension, disc brakes, and drum brakes. The suspension was equipped with coil and leaf springs. These delivered raw performances with great endurance as well. Interior features of the vehicle were bucket seats, manual windows, ventilation system, and rally gauges.
Styling
Firebird Formula 400 had clean and aggressive styling moving away from boxy. The clean hood, fastback, badging, rally stripes, and dual hood scoops stood out as the major attractions. The smooth body lines gave a classy look. It had a wide grille in the front part. This was different from other Pontiac models. Pontiac also retained the flender flare for this model. Inside the car, instrumentation and driver-focused cockpit were retained just like other Pontiac Firebird models.
Massive Torque
The major surprise of the Firebird Formula 400 was its torque. Though it was a high-revving model, the vehicle delivered around 430 lb-ft of torque. This was on par with the best muscle cars of the 60s. The acceleration was quick with 60mph in 6 seconds. Being a torque heavy vehicle, the model delivered exceptional performances. The performance was on par with Chevrolet and Trans Am. It didn’t have electronics and ABS Brakes.
Street Racing Culture
Known as the sleeper muscle car, Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 was not a NASCAR vehicle, but it participated in the USA street races and became an iconic vehicle. Though the other Firebird models competed in the SCCA racing, this vehicle featured in the local street races. It was popular in local drag racing events as well. The vehicle also featured in police shows, tv shows, street racing films, and documentaries.
Rare Vehicle
Pontiac Firebird Formula 400 did great sales throughout the production. In 1970, it sold more than 7,700 units. It was a premium vehicle priced around $3,500 USD on average. Some high-end models are priced over $4,500 USD. Every year, the production remained the same and it was another commercially successful vehicle from Pontiac. The restored versions can be collected in collector markets.
