In the 80s, Ferrari unleashed an ultimate supercar in the form of Testarossa. This was a sports car and grand tourer launched between 1984 to 1991. Testarossa was a rear mid-engine vehicle with RWD. The vehicle was equipped with a 12-cylinder engine which was rarely used in that period. Here is everything about the 1991 Ferrari Testarossa.

Flat-12 Engines 

Instead of V8 engines, Testarossa went with flat-12 engine which was equipped with a horizontally opposed 12-cylinder. Testarossa engines delivered great balance and handling. It was equipped with DOHC, Bosch electronic fuel injection system, and liquid-cooled systems. The top speed of Testarossa was around 190mph. Ferrari vehicles were always known for their acceleration and speed. The 5-speed manual gearbox was equipped with the open gated metal shifter. Every piece of equipment in the engines worked wonders and the performance was exceptional.

Features 

The vehicle was made on a steel tubular chassis. Every wheel had independent suspension. Testarossa was equipped with double wishbone suspension and antiroll bars. Another addition was the Twin side-mounted radiators. Testarossa featured leather seats, speedometer, voltmeter, AC, power windows, power mirrors, radio, and speakers. It was a luxury vehicle with some amazing interior features.

Designs 

Ferrari Testarossa was designed by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina. The vehicle had big tires with a long stance. It was a wide and wedge shaped model. There were aerodynamics everywhere. One could not take their eyes off as that’s how the vehicle was designed. There were pop-up headlights, air intake system, wedge silhouette, and side mirrors. The  available paint schemes were white, rosso corsa, dark blue, and silver.

Side Strakes

Among many things, this was the reason Testarossa found immediate success. The side strakes made the Ferrari Testarossa more popular. This was the major attraction of the vehicle. Side strakes enhanced cooling and air flow for the vehicle. These horizontal side slants were called “Cheese Graters”. It helped air flow to radiators. 

Loved By Everyone 

Right from TV shows to movies, Testarossa became an integral part of pop culture in the 80s. Testarossa’s appearances in Miami Vice made it popular. It showed Ferrari as a symbol of wealth and power. Ferrari Testarossa was also part of iconic video games like Forza Horizon and Need For Speed. Kids loved the vehicle and drove the vehicle in these games. It also appeared in the evergreen arcade racing game, Out Run. After its appearances in video games, Testarossa’s range was on another level. The white-colored Testarossa was popular among all colors.

Massive Sales

Ferrari Testarossa was not a regular model, but it was produced in large numbers. Around 7,200 units were produced between 1984-1991. It was one of the most expensive Ferrari cars in the 80s. The vehicle was sold at $180,000 USD on average. The inflation could well touch the 1 million USD mark today. Testarossa is one of the iconic supercars from Ferrari.
