The Iconic Luxurious Edsel Corsair Which Failed Commercially

Back in the late 50s, Ford explored a new brand to expand their business. Ford launched Edsel to increase sales of its mid-sized vehicles. They were unsuccessful with the Edsel Ranger and then launched the Edsel Corsair. The Corsair was another failure, but it was remembered for multiple reasons. The vehicle was in production for just 2 years between 1958 and 1959. Here is everything about the original Edsel Corsair.

1958 Edsel Corsair

MEL Engines

1958 Edsel Corsair

The 1958 Edsel Corsair was built around Ford’s MEL-Series V8 engine along with 4-barrel carburetors. Corsair was a torque heavy vehicle delivering more than 475 lb-ft of torque. The overall top speed of the vehicle was 112mph which was excellent for a full-sized vehicle in the 50s. Edsel Corsair came with advanced transmission options like teletouch push-button automatic transmission with Electro-hydraulic control system. This was unprecedented for a new model. The other models were equal with 3-speed manual transmission, Mile-O-Matic 2-speedĀ  automatic transmission, and Dual-Power 3-speed automatic transmission.

Epic Features

Ford retained the core features from its models. The Edsel Corsair was a luxury sedan with features like Plush bench seats, Deluxe wheel covers, AC, power seats, padded dashboard, and Rear child safety locks. The technical features included Deep-Dish Safety Steering Wheel and Self-Lubrication System. Ford incorporated future and innovative technologies which helped the vehicle last more miles.

World-class Designs

Just like the features, the Edsel Corsair had futuristic styling. The horse-collar grille was the iconic styling which brought fame to the model. Apart from this, Corsair featured tailfins, chrome trim, taillights, wide stance, and mercury-based rooflines. Some models had Ford Thunderbird rooflines with vertical grille. In the interior, it had metallic trim and a chromium steering wheel. Paint schemes for Edsel Corsair were white, green, and blue.

Comfortable Vehicle

Edsel Corsair was not a racing vehicle, but it was an ultra luxury model with premium features and advanced technologies. The soft suspension, engines, wide bench seats, and advanced gearboxes made sure it was a highly comfortable vehicle. There were no bumps or hiccups during the rides. The body-on-frame construction and chassis made it ideal for long drives. There were no complaints of engines getting rusty or heat.

Not a Racing Vehicle

The Edsel Corsair was never a racing vehicle, but Ford made sure some Edsor models participated in NASCAR and other motorsports events. Edsel Corsair was ideal for straight-line racing with the best engines, but it never made its entry in racing. If Edsel Corsair was designed as a coupe or sports car, it would have made headlines in motorsports.

Influence Was Massive

When we speak about Edsel Corsair’s sales, it was definitely not great. On the other hand, Edsel Corsair made headlines thanks to Ford’s image. Corsair was praised for its technology and designs, but it didn’t match the reputation of Ford. Although it was a failure, Edsel Corsair will be remembered for ages. It also appeared in automotive history books, tv shows, and documentaries.

Rare Vehicle

The Edsair Corsair did not make great sales. Overall, 19,000+ units were manufactured and sold. 2-door hardtops and 4-door hardtops contributed 70% to the total sales. It was a bit expensive model selling at an average price of $2,500 USD. Although it comes from Ford’s factory, Edsel Corsair was deemed as a new brand. This was another reason for its decline. Today, Edsel Corsair units are available in collector markets now. The base models are sold around $10,000 USD. Some restored models may cost higher which will be between $30,000 USD to $90,000 USD.
