V8 Engines

Any car in the 70s with the V8 engines could perform beyond its potential. The Montego GT was another vehicle to use the V8 engine. For this model, Mercury deployed multiple engines like Cobra Jet V8, Cleveland V8, and standard V8 engines. The Cobra Jet engine models delivered massive performances with unreal speed and handling. Montego GT’s estimated top speed was 115mph. Models with the Cobra Jet V8 engines delivered 132mph.

Features 

Mercury deployed some of Ford Torino’s best features to enhance the performance. The Montego GT was equipped with power steering, power brakes, front disc brakes, heavy-duty cooling systems, and dual exhaust. There were doubts over its interior features, but Montego GT retained the main features of its predecessor. The interior features like AC, radio, wide cabin, wide cushioned bench seats, and ashtray were there. Coil spring suspension, heavy-duty cooling system, and automatic transmissions were the major reasons for the vehicle’s smooth performances. The vehicle also had power brakes, power steering, and drum brakes.

Ford Torino Platform 

Most of the technology were inspired by Ford Torino. Be it V8 engines, transmissions, or  chassis, both shared the same. Suspension, brakes, and RWD were the same as Ford Torino. Though it was not as successful as Torino, the Montego GT was a surprise package. The car parts were the same and the interior was luxurious. This is why the Montego GT was a competitor to Dodge, Plymouth, and Chevrolet. Sharing its platform with Ford Torino was a gamechanger and helped Mercury dominate sales.

Comfortable Vehicle 

Montego GT was a highly comfortable vehicle. The smooth engines and suspension paved the way for the best driving experience. The sporty wheels and gearboxes enhanced the durability off-road. Mercury Montego GT was launched as a touring vehicle and it was the favourite of families. The big trunk space, luxury interior features, and bucket seats were the major highlights. Being Ford Torino’s clone was an advantage.

Refined Styling 

Montego GT had a refined and aggressive styling similar to many muscle cars. Wider stance, coke bottle shape, flared fenders, grille, and Mercury Badging were the major designs. There were GT stripes and badges with a long hood and short rear deck. In the rear, horizontal taillights were placed. It was an upscale styling with trims, accents, and analog gauges.

Low Volume Production

Montego GT was one of the rarest packages from Mercury. It was in sales between 1970 to 1972 with around 12,000 units. Mostly, the vehicle was sold as 2-door hardtop units. The price of Montego GT varied according to engines and forms. Standard Montego GT was available for $2,800 USD. The high-end models of Montego GT were sold for around $4,000 USD. Being a muscle car with Ford’s specifications, the price was moderate.
